Matt has been practicing architecture since 1995 and also worked part time during three years of architecture school prior to that. He has professional experience working in many facets of the profession from programming and design to construction administration. His design experience has included many municipal and public projects, as well as, corporate work and retail design. Matt has focused on providing site / location specific design based on client needs. These needs are identified through close working relationships and regular client contact.

Dan has been involved in the building industry for most of his life and a registered architect since 1994. Since that time he has worked in design and technical roles on a variety of project types ranging in value from $5000 to over $35 million.

As a true HCM'er, Dan values clear communication and a good working relationship with clients, consultants and contractors as a vital component to successful projects.

Away from the office, Dan enjoys walking 18 holes, finding the next great ride on his motorcycle and numerous activities with his family.

Elizabeth Gutzman, AIA

Liz Gutzman has been practicing architecture at HCM since 2008 and also has 4 years of experience prior to that while attending undergraduate and graduate school. Since graduating in 2009 from the University of Minnesota, she has been working full time at HCM Architects and gained a lot experience managing projects and developing client relationships. Seeing a project from start to finish is a very rewarding process and something Liz has a lot of passion for. Liz just recently completed her final ARE exam and can now officially call herself a Licensed Architect!

Outside of the office, Liz enjoys the outdoors, golfing, yoga, cheering on the MN Wild, and most importantly spending quality time with her family.

He strives to ensure that all voices of an Owner's Project Team are heard, collaboratively incorporating those ideas into the design of the facility. Byron Munoz graduated with a Master’s degree from Florida International University in 2017. He always considers himself an Architect in training because there’s always something new to learn. Byron is disciplined in various digital medias, and has a passion for combining design & technology to create projects at various scales. His ultimate goal is to develop his own firm, so he is very excited to join the team and start his career, learning every aspect of the design phase, from start to finish.

Nick LagerNick graduated from the Bachelors of Science in Architecture program from the University of Minnesota in 2018. He is looking forward to expand his knowledge of architecture and is excited to be starting the first part of his architectural career with HCM before going back to pursue his Masters degree.

Dan Porwoll

Dan recently graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor’s degree in 2021 and a Master’s degree in 2022. Throughout his educational career he has seen the ability of architecture to create meaningful discussion, evoking significant change in order to develop more intentional environments within the world around us. It is his goal to contribute to this practice, forming designs which serve the people they intend to host and be impactful in their lives. Dan is eager to begin his architectural career as a part of the HCM team and looks forward to expanding his knowledge and expertise. In addition to architecture, Dan is also passionate about music. As a drummer, he has spent many years practicing and performing for a multitude of groups and shows.

Courtney Steeves

Courtney has a background in construction. She graduated from Dunwoody College of Technology in 2016 with an AAS of Architectural Drafting and Design. After graduating she worked in a design/build company, furthering her knowledge of the construction industry. Courtney is excited to join the team and continue to gain knowledge and experience.

 

Bailey Buschke

Bailey attended North Dakota State University for both her undergraduate and graduate degree in architecture. 

 She is a practical designer with a passion for learning new technologies and methodologies in order to drive projects to success. Key areas she is interested in include, hospitality and urban planning. Bailey is dedicated to seeking sustainable and creative structural solutions to complicated problems.

She says the number one job as a designer is to simply listen. 

In her free time Bailey enjoys camping and traveling. When she’s not on the road she spends time around the house taking care of her jungle of house plants, constructing puzzles, completing various remodeling projects, or spending time with family.

 

Ilana Levine

Ilana is a senior in the University of Minnesota’s Bachelor of Design in Architecture program. Her studies have included a heavy focus in the iterative process through visuals such as sketches, watercolor, ceramics, and hand modeling. She is especially interested in developing how to design with both a human centered approach as well as one prioritizing a sustainable future.  She hopes to learn more about Higher Ed design as she continues with her professional career; specifically, how form and materiality can create spaces that are more conducive to learning.

In her free time she enjoys training for triathlons, climbing, crocheting, and tending to her six-foot long fish tank! Taking road trips is also a priority and she is currently training her new kittens in hopes that they will be able to join her on her next hiking/camping adventure!

 

Camryn Sigman

Cam is an Architectural Design Intern who recently graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2023 with her Bachelor of Design in Architecture. She is pursuing her Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. Cam is passionate about learning and working with new technologies that enable the creative process at every level.

Cam is also involved with the University of Minnesota’s - College of Design Student and Alumni Board and serves as Student Board President. The board creates opportunities, organizes events that support the transition from college to career, and connects alumni, students, and other professionals. 

Outside of school and work, Cam enjoys spending time with her family, playing pickle ball, swimming, golfing, refurbishing furniture, cooking, and working on new DIY projects around her house. She is also a passionate cat owner and enjoys spending time with her two Blue Point Siamese cats.

Nick Jackson

Nick has always been inspired by great buildings. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago afforded him the opportunity to stare at the city skyline. He decided to pursue a career in architecture with the hope of contributing to his professional passion of creating spaces that better the lives of those who use them.

In 2015, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture before receiving his Master of Architecture from Iowa State University in 2019.

He is currently in the process of testing for his architecture license. Outside of work, Nick is an amateur kickboxer and avid runner who enjoys cooking and spending time exploring the Twin Cities. He is excited to begin his journey at HCM Architects to further his understanding of the built world.

 

Banessa Balderrama

Banessa is an Architectural Designer whom graduated from Dunwoody College of Technology with her Bachelors of Architecture in spring of 2023. Banessa is currently pursuing her licensure, works hard and loves to help others. Growing up as a first generation Mexican-American, she understands the difficulties of language barriers and how hard one needs to work to be where they want to be. Banessa is one example of many that are chasing for their American dream.

Banessa’s goal is to become an Architect at HCM and work alongside her passionate coworkers to problem solve and understand clients’ needs. Banessa believes that architects and designers are one of the professions that greatly empathize because they understand and perceive the space with the client’s mindset.

In her spare time, she loves to admire historically preserved structures, going to museums, play piano, listen to R&B music, and loves to spend time with family and her dog, Meatball.
